Check it out, check it out

It rained and snowed like crazy this weekend. Look at us braving the elements. I got a new coat which is my new favorite thing. It is S.O. W.A.R.M. Seriously, it might change my life. It was -10 this morning and only my face was cold.

If you click here you'll see that my first bookcover is now listed in the UCP online catalog!

Friday was the day where I thought I was almost finished with everything. Saturday and Sunday were days full of Christmas and anniversary celebrations. Today is the day where I realize that I have lots more to do. Not imminently, but it's coming. The next few months will be carazy. (Yes, ca-razy).

Now back to work.

This is so cool..

How cool are these beds?? And the whole room!? Say it with me, "YELLOW AND GRAY! YELLOW AND GRAY!"

Last night I went to the Harry Potter midnight showing and I am s o o tired today. However, I think I've finally reached my second wind. Yeehaw! Also, the jittery coffee bugs have finally worked their way out of my system. Ha.

This weekend I'm excited to Christmas shop, see a comedy show, and hang out with Kate's family who is in town for Thanksgiving! Plus, I'm going to start packing for vacation next week! I can't wait!

Happy Friday!

GLOBES!

I love globes. L-O-V-E them. When I find myself in a more semi-permanent home, I'm going to get a really cool one. It's my plan. So naturally I found this video to be the coolest thing ever. HOW GLOBES ARE MADE! Watch and be amazed. I viewed this on mute, so I have no idea if there's talking or narration or anything, but it's still sooo cool.

Typographic Maps

My friend Adam pointed me to these awesome typographic maps designed by Axis Maps. They make so much sense in that the street names are easy to read and the important things are easy to locate. How many times have you lost your place as you tried to figure out the name of the street you're looking at? Happens all the time to me. You can purchase prints of these posters for Chicago and Boston (NYC, SF, and DC are in the works.)

Totally Dog

My dog loving brother sent me the link to this amazing dog day camp in Florida, Totally Dog. Here's what they have to say about themselves, "During the day, our canine campers swim in our bone shaped pool, run on the agility obstacles, sun bathe on our sun bathing decks, adventure through the forest, play with toys and with each other or take short naps in our shaded nap houses." Plus, they have a converted school bus that can pick the dogs up and drop them off at the end of the day. Shaded nap houses? Pool? Sunbathing deck? Um, can I go here?

Words + Shoes

The fan of words and handwriting that I am, I think these shoes are so cool.

Words Coffee Table

You know how much I love words and text, right? Ok, good. I saw this coffee table on Design*Sponge today and I think it's so cool. Liz hammered the poem "The Summer Day" by Mary Oliver onto the surface and refinished it. Pretty sweet, eh?

I think it would be really cool to do something like this.

Typophile Film Festival

A friend sent me this video a while ago, but it came my way again today and I was, once again, in awe of the work done by the BYU art student/professor team. It was created for the opening credits at the 5th Typophile Film Festival. If you haven't seen this yet, you've got to take it in. Everything was done by hand - no CGI!

Typophile Film Festival 5 Opening Titles from Brent Barson on Vimeo.

You can read more about the making of the video here.

Similarly, the BYU team made this video for the 4th Typophile Film Festival. (Both videos won awards.)

Church pew headboard

I love this headboard! I think my love is partially related to the fantastic spot for books and reading lights. This lady made it from an old church pew. Pretty cool, right??

Umbrella & Coffee

I think this "Umbrella With Coffee Handle" by designer Jung-Woo Lee is awesome!! I have had the juggling-bag-umbrella-coffee problem myself a few times and I think this concept is just fabulous. The end.

Did you know?

Check out this AMAZING video sent to me by my Grammy. It's all about the progression of information technology as told through kinetic type and graphics. For some reason I can't get the code to embed, so you'll just have to click on this link here.

Gorgeous shelves!

I love this "Hold on Tight" bookshelf by Colleen & Eric. You can adjust the built in bookend according to what you've got on the shelf. And it's GORGEOUS.

In Miniature

I love miniature things. I have a dollhouse that I built with my dad and endlessly decorated many years ago. I remember spending twenty dollars (a WHOLE twenty dollars! all at once!) on a miniature bathroom set that included a bathtub, toilet, and sink. I was pretty excited about this purchase. And don't get me started on my Half-Penny family that included parents Paul & Maureen (yes, as in Misty of Chincoteague), the twins Sandy & Andy, and baby Nina. Then there was Allison, the adopted teenager who came from a girl lego-esque set, and Jonathan, the adopted baby who I sculpted out of Sculpy (remember Sculpy??!). He even had this cute little red pacifier. The Royal Half-Penny family along with a set of grandparents lived there, too, but I digress.

The NYT did a story about the new modern miniature movement and, holy cow, I am so blown away by what these people create. Check out these photos included in the article and read the story for more information. Crazy, huh??

P.S. Happy Thursday :)

The Civic Musical Road

As an integrated advertising campaign, Honda built "The Civic Musical Road" in Lancaster, California. They designed a series of rumble strips over a stretch of road that when driven over at 50 MPH in a Civic, would play the William Tell Overture. Pretty remarkable, right? You can watch the Honda video here. Or search Youtube for "civic musical road" to see individual recordings of the music. Gosh, some people are just so good at math to come up with something like this. (And some people are also pretty good at marketing/advertising to come up with a brilliant campaign like this!)

Some fantastic book cover design...

A senior illustration student at University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Jim Tierney has an amazing senior thesis. He redesigned four Jules Verne book jackets and I'm amazed by them. Each is slightly different, including removable half jackets, transparent jackets, pin wheels, and tabs. You can see them all (and some of his other work) here. You should also watch the video on his homepage that shows how all four covers work.

Wood + Rehab

I had several windows open yesterday of pictures/things that I like but our internet experienced a few difficulties... So I am going to share them today. (And yes, the internet says thank you for your regards, she's doing much better today.) (I'm a nerd.)

I stumbled upon the blog BROOKLYNrehab and found a whole treasure trove of cool things. (Kind of makes me wish my job was to search for things like this... Oh well.)

I really like these little paper cuts hanging from clothespins. I think that I would like to decorate my... kitchen? laundry room? hallway? with this sort of thing (someday).

I also found this funky frame from paperdoll woodshop on etsy. I also like the 'M' magazine holder.

Happy Thursday! It's my favorite day of the week! (Which obviously doesn't include weekend days like Friday, Saturday, or Sunday!)
